Integrated Seaweed Processing Industry

Indonesia is the second biggest world seaweed producer with a contribution of 38% towards the global supply, with South Sulawesi as the main contributor by producing up to 4 million tons of production per year or around 65% of the national production total.

Luwu Regency is the biggest seaweed producer in South Sulawesi, with a production amounting 634 thousand tons, equals to 16.45%. The dominant seaweed types to be cultivated are Eucheuma cottonii and Gracilaria sp., which dominate market demand.

This project becomes important since it has the potential to influence the stability of seaweed price, make use of the abundant natural resource potential, create domestic employment, and boost increased added value and development of downstream industries.
